Christmas Greetings from Rev'd Bramwell and Jennifer

christmas greetingsBramwell and I have been thinking about you all especially last Saturday for the bazaar and this week with all the preparations for the Carol Service.

Bram is currently serving as Locum Chaplain for the Lausanne area here in Switzerland....and of course I am here backing him up too! Yesterday we joined the small monthly pastoral prayer group in the church where we prayed for local people and, as a special request, for the church family in Bordeaux.

We have been made very welcome and it is lovely to be celebrating the birth of Christ with them all. Both our girls are joining us for Christmas and we are looking forward to showing them some of this beautiful area....the mountains, the lake and the old town.

But our friends at Bordeaux are always in our hearts. We send our love and best wishes for a Joyous and Blessed Christmas and an exciting year ahead in 2017! With much love from us both and we will be thinking of you tomorrow (as we take part in the Ecumenical Carol Service in the centre of Lausanne). - Jennifer and Bramwell (Bearcroft)

Welcome Rev'd Dr. David and Margaret Kirby

Rev'd Dr. David Kirby and his wife, Margaret (+ Damson their labrador!) arrived safely at the Presbytery in Floirac, and will be ministering to the Bordeaux congregation until February - and what a busy time it will be!

rev'd david kirbyDavid was born and brought up in Yorkshire and went up to Durham University to study Geography. It was while he was at Durham that he and Margaret met – in an ambulance, and they were married four years later in 1966.

David was ordained in 1987 and served for thirteen years as non-stipendiary priest at St Barnabas church, at the other side of Huddersfield in Crosland Moor. On retirement from the University Margaret and David moved to Praia da Luz in the Algarve, where David was Assistant Chaplain for almost five years. On leaving the Algarve they returned to Yorkshire, living in Bramhope, on the edge of Wharfedale – which is nice for Damson the Dog - and where David is Honorary Assistant at the local parish church of St. Giles.

David and Margaret have one son, Hugh, born in 1969 and two grandsons. Margaret and David love music of many genres and love travelling, and in their Golden Wedding year had a memorable holiday in Ethiopia. Romania and Armenia are on the agenda for 2017. Welcome to Aquitaine!

Two Harvest services and a memorable day

harvest amA wonderful Harvest Festival Service was led by the Rev'd Brian Davis in Bordeaux on Sunday morning, October 2nd. Like every year, gifts were collected and given to the Foyer Fraternel Gouffrand. The choir participated actively in the service under the direction of Richard Hunt. Brian had chosen John 15:1-17 for the Gospel reading. He invited us to always be linked with the root who is the source of gentleness, self-control etc. and to imagine an individual, a family, a society, a world where this is applied.

The service was followed by a bring and share lunch, uniting the morning and the afternoon congregations. In the afternoon, Stephen Razafindratsima led a French-Madagascan Harvest Service of the Word with gifts also for the Foyer Fraternel Gouffrand and with the participation of the children in the readings. A truly memorable day for everyone.

Delighted to welcome Rev'd Tony and Ingrid to Aquitaine!

welcome tony and ingridAbundant Harvest blessings, indeed! Welcoming Rev'd Tony and Ingrid to Aquitaine has been a real pleasure, worshipping together for the first time as Tony begins to lead services at different churches around the Chaplaincy.

Tony's first service in Bordeaux was a Joint Service between the English-speaking and Madagascan-speaking communities led on September 4th. Madagascan translations of the hymns were put in the service sheet and Stephen also did a simultaneous translation of Tony’s homily. It was very special because Tony spoke about when God makes a change in our lives, like the potter’s story in Jeremiah 18, or the change Paul demanded of Philemon in Philemon 1.21, or Jesus asking us to change in Luke 14. Stephen and Holi sang “Purify my heart” during communion and were accompanied by Nampoina (Madagascan organist) who also accompanied the whole service.

Bode was with the children and they talked about our differences (represented by different hand colors on the cross) which are not important, because we are all drawn to Jesus by his salvation on the cross.

After the service there was the usual aperitif and Bring-and-Share Lunch. It was a very special moment with Tony and Ingrid, and we look forward to many more happy times in the future.
